"Tryouts"
Nexus Futbol Academy does not hold official tryouts, however, Nexus Trialists who want an invitation to apply have the chance to be evaluated by our coaches. We ask that Nexus Trialists begin by attending Heart and Sole Futsal sessions, as the Nexus Coaches are also the Heart and Sole coaches. Attending these sessions gives trialists the chance to work on technique and be developed as soccer players, and gives the coaches a chance to work with them over an extended period of time. An invitation to apply may be extended to a Nexus Trialist when the coaches feel that he or she is ready for the rigor and commitment required at Nexus. FAQs about being a Nexus Trialist at Heart and Sole:
1. Do I have to commit to playing futsal? No. Futsal is used as our "tryout," and after receiving our invitation to apply, it is strongly encouraged you continue to play futsal, but not required.
2. Can I still play futsal with my other futsal club? Absolutely! Think of attending Heart and Sole futsal training sessions as tryouts for Nexus, and only that. You'll get great training sessions as a bonus, but the goal is for the coaches to evaluate you. We love to hear you're playing futsal somewhere!
3. Do I have to commit to Heart and Sole Futsal? No. No one, not even players who compete on a Heart and Sole team, have to contractually commit to playing at Heart and Sole. Heart and Sole Futsal trainings are pay-as-you-go. Games, scrimmages, and tournament teams paid for and teams are selected for each specific event, and are based on performance and attendance to trainings.
4. How many sessions do I have to attend? As many as it might take. Some students are invited to apply after the first session and some after six-eight months of training consistently. It all depends on the player.
5. Why do you use futsal, instead of soccer, as your tryout? Futsal helps us identify if potential students have a strong technical and tactical foundation for soccer. Through Futsal, we notice the small details in the quality of the players' individual technique, how players react under pressure and solve problems in tight spaces utilizing individual skills, and how they apply quick decision making to execute individual and collective tactical concepts. As the students have more interaction with the ball in tight spaces, the easier it will be for them to solve problems on a bigger field. In soccer, you have a lot more space and you can make up for the lack of technique and poor decision making with physicality. Also, Heart and Sole trains on a weekly basis, so it's flexible to attend sessions to tryout.
6. What are you looking for in a player? Everything listed above is evaluated in the tryout, but the most important characteristics the coaches are looking for are players who are disciplined, coachable, and have a willingness to learn and compete.
