The Independent Scholar Model for Nexus High School represents a significant evolution in our approach to high school at Nexus. Unlike traditional schools built around fixed daily schedules, fully online or homeschool programs that can lack community, or athletic based models without consistent academic oversight, this model provides flexibility while maintaining rigor, structure, and meaningful mentorship. We encourage you to view the full slide presentation below to better understand the philosophy, structure, academic expectations, and long term vision behind this model. The presentation will show how flexibility, dual credit rigor, mentorship, and high performance alignment work together to prepare serious students for what comes next.

It's rare to find a full combination of:
  1. Structured in-person academic blocks
  2. Increasing dual-credit rigor (potentially transferring credits to college)
  3. Built-in mentorship and oversight
  4. High-performance training alignment with travel flexibility
  5. NCAA Awareness + Pre-Professional + Professional Opportunities
  6. Community-based, capped enrollment
  7. Study abroad integration opportunities
  8. College counseling and test preparation inside the structure
  9. Potential for a college Associate's Degree while in high school

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Independent Scholar Model?
The Independent Scholar Model is Nexus High School’s structured academic system designed for serious students pursuing high-level training. It replaces traditional seat-time schooling with mentored academic blocks, increasing dual-credit rigor, integrated college counseling, and a schedule aligned with performance demands. It is not online school, rather it's is a disciplined, in-person system built for flexibility and rigor.

2. Is this an online program?
No. Students work on campus in structured academic blocks with faculty oversight, in-person assessments, scheduled office hours, and ongoing progress monitoring. Some coursework (such as dual credit) may include online components through our partnership with Houston City College, but students are supervised and supported daily at Nexus.

3. How many hours per week are students in academics?
Students spend approximately 7–10 hours per week in structured, on-campus academic blocks, in addition to time required outside of school. As students progress through high school, academic rigor increases and expectations rise accordingly.

4. What makes this model different from traditional high school?
Traditional high schools are built around daily seat time and fixed schedules. The Independent Scholar Model is built around outcomes. It allows for:
  • Flexible scheduling for training and travel
  • Personalized academic pathways
  • Increasing dual-credit rigor
  • Structured mentorship and accountability
  • Integrated college counseling
The system prioritizes depth, discipline, and preparation for what comes next.

5. How does dual credit work?
Students take dual-credit online courses through Houston City College (HCC), earning official college credit while still in high school. These credits may transfer to many universities, depending on the institution, and are weighted the same as AP courses on the high school transcript. Dual credit becomes an increasinly larger part of the academic load as the student progresses through high school.  Some of the advanced courses in math and science would require in-person on a college campus, but none of those courses will be required for Nexus High School graduation.

6. How many college credits can a student earn before graduation?
The number varies based on readiness and academic pathway, but students can graduate with a significant number of transferable college credits. The goal is to build genuine college readiness while maintaining balance with high-performance training.

7. Is this model NCAA compliant?
Yes. Academic continuity, course alignment, and transcript documentation are structured to ensure NCAA compliance while allowing flexibility for travel and international training.

8. What support systems are in place?
Each student is assigned:
  • An Academic Mentor for planning and accountability
  • Opportunity to schedule office hours with Nexus faculty
  • Built-in support for dual-credit coursework
  • Regular progress monitoring
  • Integrated college counseling
This ensures students remain on track academically while managing training demands.

9. What happens if a student falls behind?
The model includes ongoing monitoring and faculty oversight. If a student begins to fall behind, intervention plans are implemented through mentor meetings, structured academic adjustments, and additional support to ensure progress remains aligned with expectations.

10. Can students study or train abroad?
Yes. The Independent Scholar Model is designed to allow students to continue academic progress while training or studying abroad in our Nexus locations in Bolivia and Spain. Coursework is structured but not tied to daily seat time. Students check in regularly with teachers, complete assignments independently, and remain accountable through local Bolivian or Spanish academic mentors and scheduled blocks.

11. Is this model right for every student?
No. The Independent Scholar Model is designed for serious, motivated students who are committed to both academic rigor and high-level training. It requires maturity, time management, and discipline. Families should carefully consider whether their student is ready for this level of ownership and responsibility.  The Nexus academic team will provide each family a recommendation for moving into the Nexus High School Independent Scholar Model.

12. How does scheduling work?
Scheduling may include:
  • Later starts
  • Early dismissals
  • Possible four-day academic weeks
  • Possible early graduation
  • Summer courses for those pursuing an Associate's Degree
Schedules are designed to align with training loads and travel commitments while maintaining academic standards.

13. Is college counseling included?
Yes. College counseling is integrated into the model. Students receive structured guidance with Ibrahim Firat throughout high school to prepare for admissions, testing, transcript alignment, and long-term academic planning.

14. What is the tuition?
Tuition for returning students is $18,150 (if committed with deposit by February 27) and $19,900 after February 27. The High School Independent Scholar Model includes a 10% tuition adjustment.

15. What is the ultimate goal of this model?
The goal is to prepare serious students for college, professional environments, and international opportunities by combining academic rigor with flexibility and alignment to high-performance training without forcing students to choose between the two or compromising the support, structure, and community that define Nexus.

16. Will the futbol training be different?
Training will still occur in training groups that will be created with the whole student population in mind.  That means, an 8th grade middle schooler could still be training with a 9th or 10th grader.  The only difference is there will be NO scheduled second training for the high school group.

17.  Could my high schooler join a second training if there is no scheduled academic or training block during that time?
Yes, potentially, a high school student who would like more touches could join a training session in a different training group or a middle school second session as long as it is approved by the Head of Futbol, the student's Individual Development Coach and coaching team.
